50 Pounds of Coke Leads to Arrest of 39 People

In one of the largest drug busts recently in the southeast, the Chatham-Savanna Counter Narcotics Team was able to bring down three drug gangs by leveraging a drug bust from this summer. In July, police stopped a car on I-16, a drug route between South Carolina and Georgia. The traffic stop, according to reports, was the key to wrapping up what turned into a 20-month investigation.

A press release from investigators says that three different drug gangs were targeted and along with the 39 suspects, nearly 3 million dollars in narcotics has been seized. Most of the activity was in Georgia, but the drug operations extended into South Carolina as well.

The Counter Narcotics team is based outside of Savanna, and if you haven’t heard of them, they probably prefer it that way. The elite team is tasked with ridding Chatham County of drugs and South Magazine, they are quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with and the South’s leaders in law enforcement.

With a staff of 45 agents and accessory personnel, the CNT has made their mark with this drug bust – not only taking cocaine off the streets, but seizing marijuana, weapons and more than $200,000 in cash from 15 homes in the two states.

Typically, the CNT gets involved in traffic stops where drugs are suspected and then tries to move up the food chain. Last week, officers towed a car that smelled of marijuana to the CNT office after a drug dog alerted. A search at that location revealed hidden compartments and more than 20 pounds of marijuana concealed in the vehicle. In another case, undercover officers from the unit purchased oxycontin pills – resulting in the arrest of two.
